Spinner Nathan Hauritz led a strong all-round performance from Australia's bowling attack to dismiss New Zealand for a modest total of 238 in the fourth one-day international in Auckland.

Hauritz took 3-46 from eight overs after Ricky Ponting won the toss for Australia in fine conditions. The tourists lead the five-match ODI series 2-1 and can retain the Chappell Hadlee Trophy with a win against the Kiwis on Thursday.

Shane Watson (2-34), James Hopes (2-38) and the in-form Mitchell Johnson (2-40) kept the pressure on the Black Caps who were bowled out in 44.1 overs.

Kiwi opener Brendon McCullum had breezed to 61 from 75 balls with three fours and four sixes before clipping a catch to mid-wicket at 4-130 and tailender Daryl Tuffey was the next-highest scorer with a career-best 34 from 17 balls.

Martin Guptill hit 30 from 22 balls in a 63-run opening stand with McCullum in just 7.4 overs.

Watson made the initial breakthrough when Guptill was caught at short cover.

Ross Taylor (15) looked promising before falling caught on the leg-side boundary by Mike Hussey for the second successive match.

The Black Caps were 1-120 but lost 3-10 including a double strike from Hauritz. The off-spinner removed debutant Shanan Stewart (4) and McCullum in successive overs.

Hopes, who claimed the prize wicket of Taylor, chipped in again to dismiss Scott Styris (8) caught and bowled at 5-152.

Two runs later New Zealand's experiment of promoting Daniel Vettori up two places to No.6 failed as the skipper was leg-before to Mitchell Johnson for 12.

All-rounder James Franklin (10), back after recovering from a hamstring strain, gloved an attempted sweep onto his stumps to give Hauritz his third wicket.

Tuffey heaved three consecutive sixes off Hauritz to end the 41st over but Watson halted New Zealand's momentum next ball when Gareth Hopkins (20) was caught behind.

It took a brilliant return catch from Ryan Harris to removed Tuffey and Shane Bond made a brisk 19.
